About Us
Villas Ecotucan Ecological resort was officially opened in August 2003
by sub-tourism director Jose Alberto . The project has been the undertaking
of Arturo and Sophie for the last three years.
Arturo, a Mexico city native, and Sophie, a Vancouverite who has lived
in Mexico since 1996, as well as their two young daughters moved to Bacalar
three years ago after deciding to pursue the dream of owning and operating
their own small hotel. Although it has been a big change for the whole
family we have all come to love and admire Bacalar and its people.
Construction of the hotel began in September 2000 with 5 workers digging,
breaking and forming the stone walls of cabins and restaurant area. Garden
areas we're cleaned, leaving as many trees throughout and planted with
cuttings from native tropical varieties all found on our property or close
by areas.
Extra measures we're taken to ensure proper septic systems using filtered
grey water to water garden sections, use of rainwater as well as 100 percent
solar powered electricity. Though it has been difficult and long we are
very proud and happy with how Villas Ecotucan has turned out. We give
our guests the opportunity to enjoy nature at its fullest, to meet our
local workers and to experience the charm and magic that Bacalar and its
lagoon offer. We do our very best to make each visitor feel welcome and
happy during their stay.
We like to support the local artisans. At Ecotucan we have a small gift
store on premises which allows local artists to sell handicrafts at the
price they choose. Artists pay no commissions or fees to sell their articles
in our hotel.
